Lifeguards return to Westwood Beach

Jun 29, 2021 | 5:28 AM

NANAIMO – Swimmers at Westwood Lake will now do so under the watchful eye of lifeguards.

City of Nanaimo lifeguards are now back at Westwood Lake starting Tuesday, June 29.

They’ll keep swimmers safe until Sept. 5 every day from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

There weren’t any lifeguards at Westwood Lake in 2020 due to the pandemic, despite it being outdoors.

Swimming lessons also begin at Westwood starting July 6.

It was revealed in a City discussion about reopening the Beban Park Pool, the City lost many lifeguards to other jobs during the pandemic and rehiring was proving to be a challenge.

Westwood Lake is the only public beach in Nanaimo with lifeguards.
