NANAIMO — Three weeks removed from the launch of B.C.’s restart plan, active COVID-19 cases are continuing their march down.

A joint statement from public health and the province reported 277 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed over the weekend, an average of less than 100 from the three reporting periods.

Island Health reported 12 new cases over the weekend including one in the central Island.

Active cases in the health authority dropped marginally, down 1 to 56 with seven active on the central Island. A majority of the new and currently active cases are in the south Island.

Provincially, active cases took a sharp drop to 1,537, down over 300 from Friday, June 11. Among active cases province-wide, 136 people are in hospital including 42 in intensive care.

An additional four fatalities linked to COVID-19 were announced.

Vaccination efforts continue to speed along at public health clinics across B.C., with 75.9 per cent of eligible people in the province receiving at least a first dose.

A total of 4,048,346 doses were administered as of Monday afternoon, 15 per cent of which were second doses.

Earlier Monday, Premier John Horgan announced a move to phase two of the province’s restart plan, effective Tuesday, June 15.

Among the changes are an increase in people allowed at social gatherings, a return for high-intensity fitness classes and no further restriction on non-essential travel across B.C.
