Province announces $50M fund for major tourist attractions

May 18, 2021 | 12:40 PM

NANAIMO — Applications are now open for funding to help drive tourists to the province’s largest attractions when restrictions ease in coming weeks.

Premier John Horgan on Tuesday, May 18 announced $50 million for tourism operators and bus companies. Payments max out at $1 million for operators and $500,000 for bus companies.

Horgan said the pandemic had far-reaching effects on B.C.’s tourism industry and economy.

“Not just on those anchor attractions, but to the many communities that depend on tourism landmarks to have people coming through their community to boost the local economy and bring visitors to town.”

Under the BC Major Anchor Attractions Program, major attractions receiving more than 75,000 visitors annually are eligible for up to $1 million.

Attractions in rural areas receiving at least 15,000 visitors a year are eligible for up to $500,000.

Tour bus operators carrying at least 30,000 passengers annually can also receive a maximum of $500,000.

The province said “turnstile” attractions such as amusement and wildlife parks, botanical gardens, museums and science centres would meet its funding criteria.

Examples of non-eligible entities include the accommodation sector, casinos, wineries, spas, festivals and marinas.

Premier Horgan said the funds are an important first step in assisting the pandemic-battered tourism sector and followed recommendations from a tourism task force.

Applications are open until June 7 and the province intends to deliver the money the following month.
