NANAIMO — A developer intends to demolish an old downtown medical building in favour of a six-storey market rental building.

Development permit plans were recently submitted for the site on Campbell at Wallace streets, featuring 163 units ranging from studio apartments to as large as three bedroom units.

The U-shape project was discussed at a Design Advisory Panel committee meeting on Thursday, May 13 where the panel made seven recommendations, most involving landscaping suggestions.

The panel indicated its support for the proposed building’s form and character, while no concerns were expressed about intended height and setback variance requests.

At this point the building’s exterior is planned to be primarily fiber cement siding with brick at the base along with metal and wood accenting.

Two levels of underground parking are proposed for the development.

The project involves four lots to be combined into one bordering Ecole Pauline Haarer Elementary School and Tim Hortons.

It’s currently a boom period for multi-family residential construction in the city, including the downtown area.

City officials continue reviewing a development permit application from Telus located two blocks away on Wallace at Wentworth streets for a 197 rental housing development on vacant land.

The City reported 638 multi-family residential units received building permits last year, aligning with a clear trend of increased attached housing construction in Nanaimo since 2014.
