QUALICUM BEACH — Town council has returned to full strength following a byelection.

Anne Skipsey was declared the winner after unofficial results were tabulated on Saturday, May 15, beating Sarah Duncan (1,017) by 522 votes.

Skipsey was the top vote getter in the 2014 vote for Qualicum Beach council, but did not run for re-election in 2018.

“We are pleased with the level of citizen engagement during this by-election, especially with increased restrictions and hurdles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Heather Svensen, chief election officer, said in a statement.

Jean Young (431 votes), Peter Kent (342) and Brian Denbigh (36) were also on the ballot to elect a replacement for Adam Walker after he moved into provincial politics in late 2020.

A total of 3,365 votes were cast for this vote, down by around 1,300 from the votes counted during the 2018 municipal election. Two advance voting days accounted for 1,489 votes while another 896 votes came via mail.

980 votes were cast on Saturday which made voter turnout at round 41 per cent.

“Anne Skipsey will be officially sworn in at the Regular Council Meeting on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.,” a release from the Town of Qualicum read.

The swearing in ceremony will be streamed online.
