PORT ALBERNI – The Clippers broke open a tight 2-1 game in the third period to take down the Cowichan Valley Capitals 5-2.

Kai Daniels and Jaeger Murdock got Nanaimo on the board in the opening twenty minutes and the Clippers ended the first with a 2-1 advantage.

The game stayed that way until Trevor LeDonne bounced a shot off the end boards and banked it in behind Cowichan netminder Jayden Shull early in the third.

Jack O’Brien and Liam Ryan (PPG) upped the lead to 5-1 before a late Cowichan marker capped the scoring.

Goalie Jordan Naylor and the Clippers penalty killers were put to the test in the second period as the Capitals registered 15 shots and had four power plays including a lengthy five on three.

In the end Nanaimo outshot Cowichan 43-35 with the Clippers going 1/2 on the man advantage and 4/5 on the penalty kill.

With two wins in as many days the Clippers have four points and lead the Island Pod in the standings.

The Clippers and Capitals will continue their rivalry with games Apr. 6 and Apr. 9.

Nanaimo will also battle Victoria Apr. 10.
