PORT ALBERNI — After a 13 month layoff the Nanaimo Clippers won their first game of the shortened 2020-2021 season over Victoria.

The Clippers battled from behind for most of the afternoon but scored the only two goals of the third period 12 seconds apart to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead.

Keighan Gerrie, Luke Lavery, Thomas Maia and Tristan Fraser scored the Nanaimo goals while third star Jordan Naylor made 42 saves.

The game was tied 1-1 through 20 minutes and the Grizzlies went up 3-1 early in the second.

Nanaimo had all three tallies in the back half of the game to secure the win.

Victoria outshot the Clippers 45-29 thanks in part to a power play advantage of six to three.

The BCHL’s leading goal scorer Ellis Rickwood had the lone man advantage goal in the second period, his fifth marker of the young season for the Grizzlies.

Nanaimo will play their 20 game schedule in a span of 35 days continuing on Easter Sunday with a 5 p.m. game against Cowichan Valley.
