Machete wielding man in mental distress tased, taken into custody by Oceanside RCMP

PARKSVILLE — A police call of a suspicious man walking into a Parksville restaurant with a machete quickly escalated into the man attacking a police car.

The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30.

Cpl. Jesse Foreman told NanaimoNewsNOW said officers were first called due to the suspicious nature of the 25-year-old man in the Tim Hortons, who walked away on Hwy. 19A before officers arrived.

Police found him near the orange bridge, where he unsheathed the machete.

“De-escalation techniques weren’t working,” Foreman said. “The man didn’t want to talk to police or deal with them at all. He ended up turning on us.”

Foreman said the man managed to put the machete through the hood of a police cruiser before being tasered. tried stabbing the hood a nearby cop car with the machete, before being tasered.

The man was taken for a mental health evaluation and then into Oceanside RCMP custody Wednesday morning.
