NANAIMO — More than 100,000 people have received at least one COVID-19 shot throughout Island Health, representing 13 per cent of the eligible population.

Island Health reported nearly 25,000 seniors and staff combined received their first COVID shots at all forms of care homes within Island Health.

Fifty First Nations communities received 11,500 doses.

Community clinics launched across Island Health on March 15 administered 15,000 doses to seniors.

As of Friday, March 26, seniors born in or before 1947 can book their vaccination.

Seniors on Gabriola Island received their first doses at a community clinic on Tuesday, March 23 as part of Island Health’s strategy to vaccinate residents in more rural settings.

The province expects everyone eligible to receive a COVID vaccination will receive a first shot before July 1 under phase three and four of the immunization program.

Island Health said in a news release it expects people will be contacted when it’s their time for a second shot slated to happen roughly four months after the first one.

A province-wide online COVID vaccination booking system is expected to launch on April 6.
