Construction reducing lanes, adding bike route on Front St. begins
NANAIMO — A substantial overhaul of downtown Nanaimo’s street closest to the water is set to begin.
Construction on Front St. from Port Dr. to the Terminal Rd. intersection start on Monday, March 15.
Bill Sims, general manager of engineer and public works, told NanaimoNewsNOW the project will reduce the number of car lines to two from four, increase on-street parking by shuffling locations and add a two-way bike path.
“The whole idea is to make the street more friendly to pedestrians. This is really an attempt to get it at a human scale, a little more calm and make a better feeling of connection between downtown and the waterfront.”
