NANAIMO — What started as his first NHL goal for a Nanaimo defenseman turned into a memorable night for the rookie.

Dylan Coghlan with the Vegas Golden Knights netted all three goals for Knights in their Wednesday game against the Minnesota Wild.

“I’ve definately had some chances to score this year and I haven’t capitalized, I don’t know if just nervous or a bad bounce. It was nice to get one and to get two more was awesome,” Coghlan said in a post-game press conference.

His first goal came less than two minutes into the game, followed by his second with six minutes left in the third period and his final goal to seal a hat trick with roughly two minutes left in the game.

Coghlan’s tallies couldn’t clinch the game against Minnesota, who won 4-3.

He was asked following the game when the last hattrick he’d scored was.

“Probably when I was ten years old maybe, I’m not sure. I’ve had a couple of close calls in Junior.”

Before Wednesday’s game, Coghlan earned an assist in his ninth game with the Knights on Feb. 9 against Anaheim.

He’s played 12 games with the Knights so far this season, averaging around 13:26 minutes of ice time.

Coghlan’s path to NHL ice wasn’t always considered a sure thing. He was signed as an undrafted free agent of Vegas in 2017.

He played minor hockey in Nanaimo, graduated from the North Island Silvertips major midget program before starring as a standout member of the Tri City Americans for four years in the WHL.
