Woman missing after boat fire near Ladysmith marina

LADYSMITH — Mounties are continuing to search the Ladysmith Harbour for a woman who was last seen alive on a large boat when it caught fire.

According to police the fire broke out on the nearly 50-foot vessel around 5 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27. When fire crews arrived at the Ladysmith Marina the vessel was fully engulfed in flames.

Two people were on the boat when it caught fire. One man was rescued by an onlooker in a small boat.

“Tragically the second occupant of the boat, a woman in her 60’s, was unable to escape the blaze,” stated Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, RCMP Spokesperson.

The man suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The vessel was floating away from the marina and was eventually towed to shore by Ladysmith Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue.

Divers combed the area on Saturday but were unable to locate the woman.

Ladysmith RCMP are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact police.
