NANAIMO — Police are investigating after a woman was hit while crossing a busy downtown Nanaimo street.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Terminal Ave. and Commercial St. just after 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 after a 60-year-old woman was hit by an older model blue pickup travelling northbound while crossing at the intersection’s crosswalk.

Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW the driver and car allegedly ran a red light and fled the scene, but officers didn’t have to go far to find her.

“Several minutes later unbeknownst to us, she shows up at our detachment and walks up to the front counter and starts to lay a complaint against somebody.”

Using information gathered from witnesses, police quickly identified the 32-year-old woman as the driver of the vehicle and arrested her.

She faces charges of dangerous driving and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

Police are continuing their investigation and the driver remained in custody as of Friday afternoon.

“The question remains as to why she was driving that way, there is lots of investigation required and there may be secondary car associated to her behaviour.”

O’Brien said the complaint she was lodging at the detachment “may have an impact on this investigation”.

The woman hit sustained only minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

The intersection is one of the more crash-prone ones in downtown Nanaimo. According to ICBC, 41 crashes occurred between 2015 and 2019.
