Island Health COVID cases remain high as province drops

NANAIMO — The number of new COVID-19 cases in Island Health shot up again as the province sees fewer new cases.

Island Health announced 36 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, Feb. 24, marking the fourth day with more than 32 new cases. This is compared to the roughly 22 new cases a day seen so far throughout February.

The number of active cases jumped by more than 10 to 245, with 150 in the central Vancouver Island region.

The rolling three day average of new COVID cases within Island Health is the highest its been throughout the pandemic.

Across B.C., a joint statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix announced 456 new COVID-19 cases, back down to recent trends in the mid-400’s after spikes of more than 500 new cases in recent days.

There’s currently 4,668 active cases province-wide, with a further 7,924 people under active public health monitoring due to exposure events.

Nearly 240 people in the province are currently hospitalized with 64 people in intensive care.

A further two people passed away due to COVID-19. The rolling seven-day average of COVID-19 fatalities in B.C. is at its lowest since mid-November, before they spiked in late December.

The statement said 230,875 doses of vaccine have been administered in the province, including 62,608 second doses.
