Development permit to be approved for first of many new supportive housing sites

NANAIMO — The first steps of a longer process bringing more supportive housing to Nanaimo are underway.

Nanaimo councillors on Monday, Feb. 22 approved three readings of a development permit for 702 Nicol St.

The site, a former gas station, is to become a 59-unit supportive housing complex, built by BC Housing and operated by the Island Crisis Care Society.

The four-storey building will also include an accessory community meeting space.

After two virtual neighbourhood meetings in December, 2020, BC Housing added more natural features to the outside of the building in an effort to better blend in with the neighbourhood, revised the 3.3 metre fence and added parking spaces.

The project was quickly granted three readings with final approval expected at an upcoming council meeting.

It’s one of two supportive housing projects being built on Nicol St. as part of a substantial project which includes renovating and rebuilding the existing temporary housing on Terminal Ave.

A development permit being granted for the 702 Nicol St. project was originally slated for the summer or fall of 2020, with construction finished in mid-to-late 2021.
