NANAIMO — Police were at the right place at the right time to arrest a man who allegedly claimed he would stab workers at the Nanaimo Canadian Tire.

A Nanaimo RCMP news release stated officers happened to be driving by the Uplands Dr. store on Saturday, Feb. 13 around 3 p.m. when they heard about a volatile shoplifter at the store.

Canadian Tire employees followed the suspect, later identified as Jackson Dennis Stephen Filgate, at a safe distance who was walking away from the store. He was tracked by police near the intersection of Uplands Dr. and Oliver Rd.

“The employees of Canadian Tire handled a volatile situation the best they could. Without getting to close to the suspect, they followed from a safe distance, and provided current information to police dispatch,” Cst. Gary O’Brien said in the release.

Officers surrounded him and safely arrested him, noting the suspect had two folding knives in his pockets and a small amount of suspected fentanyl and heroin. Filgate was found with an allegedly stolen bottle of bonding agent from Canadian Tire.

He allegedly provided a false name to police.

Filgate spent the night in jail and was released following a court appearance the next day. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 2.

Filgate faces numerous charges including theft, possessing stolen property, possessing drugs, uttering threats and obstruction.

He has an extensive criminal record, including numerous property crime and drug convictions in the Nanaimo and Victoria areas.
