NANAIMO — Seldom does Mother Nature have such perfect timing when it comes to winter storms.

The region’s second snowfall of note this winter fell conveniently over the Family Day long weekend, beginning the evening of Friday, Feb. 12 after many had wrapped work and extending through holiday Monday, Feb. 15.

NanaimoNewsNOW collected a handful of images and video of people safely enjoying the snow throughout the city.

Dozens of people descended on area hills to take advantage of fresh snow. Skiers, snowboarders and sledders took over places like Dover Bay secondary and Cilaire elementary schools.

Snowmen, forts and other sculptures also dotted covered sports fields and front yards.

Environment Canada said 34 centimetres were recorded at the Nanaimo airport from Friday through Monday morning and just over 13 centimetres of snow fell in Qualicum Beach over the same time period.

The forecast calls for wet snow turning to rain showers with a high of around plus three degrees on Monday, with a gradual warming for the week ahead.
