NANAIMO — Island Health has confirmed new COVID-19 cases at two local care homes, declaring an outbreak at both sites.

Eden Gardens and Wexford Creek were announced as the latest COVID-19 outbreak sites in the city on Sunday, Feb. 14 by Island Health.

“One staff person has tested positive for COVID-19 at each site. At this time, no residents are experiencing symptoms,” a release from the health authority said.

Island Health is connecting with the family of residents at both facilities. Both staff members who tested positive are isolating at home.

Testing is underway at both facilities with those identified through contact tracing being routinely monitored. Current staffing levels are being maintained to ensure patient care.

Wexford Creek, located in Chase River in south Nanaimo, said its outbreak is limited to one floor at the facility. Admissions, transfers and visits are temporarily suspended.

Eden Gardens, off Northfield Rd. in central Nanaimo, reported its outbreak being limited to seniors and staff who participated in specific activities on certain days.

“Enhanced control measures have been put in place at both sites. Island Health is working with Wexford Creek and Eden Gardens leadership and staff to identify anyone who may have been exposed,” Island Health’s release said.

It’s the third outbreak at a long term care home in Nanaimo. Chartwell Malaspina declared an outbreak in late December, ultimately confirming it was over on Feb. 4.

Seven residents and two staff members tested positive during the outbreak, with two residents passing away.
