NANAIMO — Police are continuing an investigation into a late-night single vehicle accident on the Nanaimo Parkway.

Emergency services attended a stretch of Hwy. 19 adjacent to Pryde Vista golf course around 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said witnesses reported a Suburu Outback lost control and rolled multiple times, hitting the barricade before coming to rest.

“Two occupants were seen running from the vehicle. At the scene, witnesses found suspected drugs and multiple weapons.”

Suspected cocaine and fentanyl were eventually seized by RCMP from the vehicle, along with a collapsable baton and several machetes.

A Police Service Dog was called upon and tracked a man approximately a kilometre through the golf course to the 100 block of Pryde Ave.

The “less than forthcoming” man sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries and was arrested, then released to receive medical care.

O’Brien said the police investigation continues and charges are possible. The individuals are “now known” to police and it’s believed they were involved in the local drug trade.

“At this point we can’t determine who was driving, who owned the drugs and the vehicle, or what’s left of it, has been returned to the registered owner. They’ll have some questions to answer for ICBC.”

The drugs and weapons will be destroyed by Nanaimo RCMP.
