Nanaimo youth ticketed for breaking COVID-19 protocols in school parking lot

NANAIMO — Police “brought the hammer down” on young people partying in a Nanaimo school parking lot.

Eleven teenagers were each given a $230 ticket for not following COVID-19 protocols near midnight on Saturday, Dec. 19 in the parking lot of Dover Bay Secondary School.

Cst. Gary O’Brien says a Nanaimo RCMP officer first noticed the group closer to 11 p.m. and gave them a warning.

When she returned 40 minutes later, the group of teens had expanded.

“There was no respect for protocols. Nobody had a mask on, they were going between cars talking and having a little party like kids do.”

O’Brien said the teens were apologetic and understanding of why they were ticketed.

This is the largest number of tickets handed out in Nanaimo for breaking the COVID-19 Related Measures Act.

O’Brien said they expect many more will be handed out during the holiday season.
