NANAIMO — Invaluable cheques keep rolling in from the 100+ Women Who Care Mid-Island to help cash-strapped charities scraping by.

The more than 100 women in the organization each individually commit to donating $100 four times a year to a registered charity in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith area.

Committee member Shannon Gorgichuk told NanaimoNewsNOW the end result is well north of $10,000 going to a worthy local cause every three months.

“I’ve been made aware of many charities that I had never heard of before and many of these charities make a huge difference in our community.”

Gorgichuk said their charity is a simple, efficient way to support important causes, which is a huge draw for the membership.

A representative from the latest group supported by the women updates them during their next virtual meeting.

“They do speak and let us know what impact the money has made for them and what they were able to do just because of getting our donation,” Gorgichuk said.

The Nanaimo Family Life Association was the latest charity to benefit from the organization, receiving $12,100 on Thursday, Dec. 17.

Gorgichuk said their charity is always accepting new members and will be around for a long time.

“When people join they’re surprised how simple it is to be able to raise that sort of dollar amount in less than an hour of a meeting and really see that money get put into action right away.”

The organization has donated $236,300 to 19 Nanaimo area non-profit groups since June, 2016.
