NANAIMO — Island Health has concluded its best week in the COVID-19 pandemic in over a month.

Five new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Island Health on Friday, Dec. 18, part of 624 across the province.

The additions cap a banner week for the health authority with a rolling three-day tally of just 14 cases, the lowest such total since the first week of November.

Provincially, the number of active cases dropped below 10,000. Island Health is reporting 62 active cases, down 14 from Thursday.

The number of people in hospital across B.C. also dipped marginally to 356, 92 of whom are receiving intensive or critical care. Five patients remain in Island Health hospitals with one in critical care.

A further 11 people passed away in the last 24 hours from COVID-19 in B.C., including one within Island Health. The fatality was the 10th death in the health authority throughout the pandemic.

B.C.’s vaccine rollout program continues with over 2,500 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech shot administered to healthcare workers in the Lower Mainland.

The province’s first shipment of the vaccine contained 3,900 doses with more expected leading into Christmas.

Public health expects to set up the first vaccination clinics in other health authorities as soon as next week.
