NANAIMO — Restrictions meant to curb the spread of COVID-19 throughout the province have yet to have a significant impact on daily case counts.

A further 887 cases were announced through a joint statement from public health and the province on Thursday, 18 of which originated in the Island Health region.

The number of active cases increased slightly to 7,899 provincially. A total of 171 cases are currently active within Island Health, including five people in hospital with one receiving intensive care.

Of the active cases, 294 people remain in hospital with 64 of those receiving intensive care, numbers which are largely unchanged from Wednesday.

A large portion of the new cases stem from the Fraser Health region, accounting for 612, or 69 per cent of Thursday’s announcement. Vancouver Coastal Health had 168 new cases of the virus.

Across B.C., 13 more people passed away due to COVID-19 illness, bringing the total to 384 people.

“Slow and steady is what we need with COVID-19 and it is how we will get through this second wave,” the joint statement read. “The efforts we make each day make a difference.”

Over 10,300 people are under daily public health monitoring while just under 20,000 people have fully recovered from COVID-19 after previously testing positive.

To date, 29,973 COVID cases have been confirmed in British Columbia, including 544 within Island Health.
