NANAIMO — The rising number of COVID-19 cases within Island Health continues unabated.

A record-breaking 20 new cases were confirmed on Wednesday, Nov. 18 in a joint statement from the province. The previous daily high was 16, which happened numerous times in the last week.

This brings Island Health across the 400 case mark, reaching 417.

The central Vancouver Island area, encompassing the mid-island all the way to the Pacific Ocean, has 71 of 118 active cases within Island Health.

Across B.C., 762 new cases were announced, once again primarily in the Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal regions. More than 6,800 active cases are found in the province, with 209 people in hospital and 58 receiving intensive care.

“This second surge is putting a strain on our health-care system, our workplaces and us all,” the statement said.

“While your personal efforts may seem small or having little impact, the collective benefit to every community in every region is significant.”

A further 10 people passed away due to COVID-19, a slight decrease from the day before.

“Now is the time to stay small, stay local and do your part – at home, work, school and in your community.”
