NANAIMO — Two new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed at Randerson Ridge Elementary while one has tested positive from Ladysmith Secondary.

The confirmations mark the fourth and fifth schools in School District 68 to have coronavirus exposure events. Randerson is the third cluster, joining Dover Bay and John Barsby Secondary.

Island Health announced late Sunday, Nov. 15, two cases of the virus had been confirmed among the school community at Randerson, with potential exposures at the school on Nov. 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10.

Ladysmith Secondary school has one confirmed case with exposure events on Nov. 9, 10, 12 and 13.

It was not confirmed whether the new cases were students or staff members.

The individuals are currently isolating at home and Island Health has completed contact tracing. Those who came in direct contact with the individuals having been notified.

A similar exposure event at Frank J. Ney elementary school was confirmed earlier on Sunday.

The notices come days after multiple cases were discovered at Dover Bay and John Barsby secondary schools, with both sites also considered COVID-19 clusters.

Island Health defines an exposure as one person with a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19 who was in the community during the infectious period. Clusters involve two or more people.

An outbreak, like the one ongoing at a department within Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, involve multiple people where transmission may be more widely spread.
