NANAIMO — For the fourth time in five days, British Columbia has posted over 500 new COVID-19 cases.

Over 92 per cent were in the Lower Mainland with just seven recorded in the Island Health authority. It brings the total number of cases within the health authority throughout the pandemic to 308.

Across B.C., 5,133 people are considered as an active COVID-19 case. There are 41 active cases within Island Health including 12 in the central region. Twenty cases are active in the southern Vancouver Island area while nine are in the north.

The number of hospitalizations increased slightly to 142, including 46 people receiving intensive care.

Public health also confirmed three additional COVID-19 related deaths, taking the number of people who have lost their lives as a result of the coronavirus to 284.

Nearly 10,000 people are also self-isolating after coming in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case. These people are not considered active and are being monitored daily by public health.

“A growing number of people in British Columbia are now self-isolating at home, away from their work, school, friends and family, which in turn is creating unnecessary financial and emotional strain for far too many,” a joint statement from the province and public health read.

On Tuesday, a second confirmed case of COVID-19 was announced at Dover Bay Secondary School in Nanaimo.

Four games in the VIJHL were also postponed as a result of earlier exposures at the school.
