Police narrow suspect pool in viral hot coffee attack against Nanaimo McDonald’s employee

NANAIMO — Police consider a high-profile attack against a Nanaimo fast food worker an “active and advancing investigation.”

Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW several suspects emerged from the Oct. 13 incident captured on surveillance video at the Terminal Ave. McDonald’s, resulting in minor burns to an employee working the drive-thru window.

He said police have had “significant interactions with the public” who were shocked by the irate customer’s actions.

“As a result of that we’ve received upwards of a dozen tips and it’s now up to investigators to narrow down that suspect pool and we think we’re going in the right direction.”

O’Brien said four to five suspects are being short-listed as police focus on who they believe is responsible.

He acknowledged the public’s desire to have the disturbing case solved in a timely manner, but said prudence is required to compile a solid case to prosecute.

“When the public gravitates to it that adds extra pressure, but we have to make sure we have the right person, we follow the correct steps and the evidence we gather is admitted in court,” O’Brien said.

The male victim did not require medical attention after receiving burns to an arm.

The incident originated from an incorrect order, which police said was resolved prior to the suspect tossing the hot drink at the victim.

O’Brien said the dashcam video remains central to their investigation.

A brief police description lists the suspect as a white woman between 35 and 45-years-old with long dark hair.
