Suspect identified in substantial north Nanaimo storage lockers heist

NANAIMO — A man wanted by two Vancouver Island police departments is also a suspect in a significant break-in of storage lockers in Nanaimo.

Michael Arthor Leighton, 32, is a suspect in Sept. 27, 2020 break- ins to three storage lockers at a McRobb Ave. apartment, which included the theft of $40,000 worth of silver coins and a pistol.

Leighton is wanted for 10 property related warrants in the Comox Valley and an assault warrant from the Saanich Police Department.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said solving property crimes are often priority files for police.

“They not only rob people of their property but it causes fear and anxiety in the community,” O’Brien said. “This person is obviously being very fluid, he’s moving from community to community.”

Leighton is white, 5’11”, 175 lbs. With dark hair often tied in man bun. Leighton is associated to a silver/white 2008 Mercedes with the BC license plate: KW512L.

O’Brien warned the public Leighton could be in possession of Ruger MK. 22 caliber 11 semi-automatic pistol stolen in the McRobb Ave. incident. That weapon’s serial number is 27445686.
