NANAIMO — After escaping largely unscathed over a record weekend across B.C., Island Health has continued to buck the COVID-19 trend.

Just two new cases were confirmed for the health authority on Tuesday, Oct. 20, part of 167 across the province. However the number of active cases in Island Health dropped from 14 to 11.

Five are on southern Vancouver Island with six in the central region.

Provincially, 1,688 active cases persist including Tuesday’s increase. Of those, 69 people are in hospital including 18 in intensive care.

In a statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, one new death was also confirmed to be linked to COVID-19, the 254th fatality in British Columbia.

A series of healthcare facility outbreaks were also discovered, all in the Lower Mainland.

There are no healthcare, community or school exposures listed for Island Health.

“Let’s continue to support our neighbours, local businesses and communities, who are doing their part,” the statement read.

“Take the time to reach out to friends and neighbours – in a safe way – to show them you care and remind them that while you may be keeping a safe distance right now, they are not alone.”
