Speed camera now in effect at crash prone Nanaimo intersection

Oct 9, 2020 | 5:32 AM

NANAIMO — Speeders now have more incentive to slow down on the Island Hwy/Aulds Rd intersection.

The only automated speed enforcement camera on Vancouver Island became operational in north Nanaimo on Sept. 21, according to Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.

A red light camera is already capturing violators at the intersection.

“Neither government nor police will disclose the speed threshold that triggers the cameras. This is consistent with every other Canadian jurisdiction using automated speed enforcement,” said a statement from the ministry.

The speed camera’s use in Nanaimo was delayed to allow motorists to adjust to a speed limit reduction in the area of 10 kilometers an hour to 70 kilometres per hour.

According to the ministry, the intersection was the site of an average of 61 crashes annually between 2014 and 2018, with nearly half of those incidents causing injuries.

A red light camera is also set up further south on the old Island Hwy. At Bowen Rd.

Intersection safety cameras are set up at 140 high crash intersections across the province.

35 of the digital cameras in B.C. monitor both red light and speed violations.

The speed cameras were added to the province’s intersection safety initiative in the summer of 2019.
