COVID-19 cases rise slightly within Island Health

NANAIMO — North Vancouver Island once again has an active COVID-19 case.

One new case in the Island Health region was confirmed by the province on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Data directly from Island Health showed it’s in the north Vancouver Island region and the only case active in the area.

The northern tip of the health region went 18 days without a new COVID-19 diagnosis before the new active case.

There remains five active COVID-19 cases within each of the central and south Vancouver Island regions, for a total of 11.

The Island Health total sits at 221, with 67 coming from the central Vancouver Island area.

Across B.C., provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry confirmed 102 new cases on Tuesday.

There’s now 9,841 total cases, with the number of active cases rising to 1,384 and 71 people in hospital.

Dr. Henry announced two additional fatalities, for a total of 244 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in B.C.

No new community or health-care facility outbreaks were reported.

On Tuesday, the BC CDC reported passengers on board Air Canada flight 8261 from Vancouver to Nanaimo may have been exposed to COVID-19.

The CDC said passengers in rows 1-7 were affected by a confirmed COVID-19 case being on board. It is recommended people on that flight self-isolate for 14 days and contact public health.
