Woman killed walking her dog along Hwy. 1 in early morning crash

NANAIMO — A 37-year-old woman from Nanaimo lost her life while walking her dog along Hwy. 1.

She was hit by a car along Hwy. 1, north of the southern-most Cedar Rd. intersection, around 6 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 28.

Cpl. Chris Manseau said the woman and her dog both succumbed to injuries at the scene.

“BC Ambulance transported the driver of a small, blue Nissan sedan to hospital as they had received non-life threatening injuries in the collision.”

Ladysmith RCMP are investigating the crash along with BC Coroner’s Service, South Island Traffic Services and crash analysts.

Southbound lanes were impacted throughout the morning commute with traffic shut down at points.

Manseau said it’s too early to know the cause of the crash.

“The investigators are still trying to determine the cause and they want to speak to that driver once they’re out of hospital,” Manseau said.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the woman and her dog walking along the highway prior to the crash to contact them.
