NANAIMO — The number of COVID-19 cases within Island Health rose sharply over the weekend.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced on Monday, Sept. 21 there were seven new COVID-19 cases within the Vancouver Island Health Authority region since Friday.

This is the highest number of new cases announced after a weekend for Island Island Health, which covers three reporting days within Island Health since the beginning of June.

The highest number of new cases over a consecutive three day period is 10 since early June.

Dr. Henry confirmed 366 new cases across B.C. since Friday, with active cases reaching a record high of 1,987. Currently, 11 cases are active in the Island Health region.

Four additional people passed away due to COVID-19 related ailments, for a province-wide death toll of 227.

The number of new cases continues an upward trend since the province eased restrictions in late July and in particular since school resumed.

“We’ve had a number of exposures in a number of school settings. They’re mostly very low risk, which is what we would expect,” Dr. Henry said.

“We’ve had no clusters, no transmission events in schools and no outbreaks at this point.”
