NANAIMO — For the third time this week, the Island Health region did not register a new case of COVID-19.

The total number of COVID-19 cases within Island Health remains at 196 with just nine currently active.

A total of 139 cases were recorded elsewhere, including seven epi-linked cases which are not considered active. The province reported 40 positive tests from Aug. 11 to Sept. 16 from people who did not have a personal health number.

The additions mean 1,803 cases are now active across British Columbia. Fifty-nine people remain in hospital for their symptoms, 20 are in intensive care.

“The cases we are seeing today are a direct result of how we spent our Labour Day long weekend. Let’s break the chain of transmission and turn this trend around,” a statement from the province read.

Public health continues to daily monitor 3,075 people after known contact with a person who later tested positive for COVID.

Three people died in the last 24 hours as a result of coronavirus, bringing the provincial death toll to 223.

In the statement, the province again encouraged a back-to-basics approach for bending B.C.’s climbing curve down.

“We need to push the COVID-19 curve back down. We have the knowledge, the tools and resources to do just that. Always using your layers of protection and choosing to stick with your ‘safe six’ will help all of us this weekend and every weekend ahead.”

Data on school outbreaks and exposures for all health authorities is now available on the BC CDC website, however none have been confirmed in the Island Health region so far.
