List of downtown Nanaimo ‘quick wins’ projects expands

NANAIMO — A substantial number of small projects designed to bring more light and style to downtown Nanaimo were completed in one year.

Changes such as improving lighting in City-owned parking lots, repainted crosswalks, adding more public fountains and promoting local artwork were included in a list of completed “quick wins.”

Bill Corsan, director of community development, told councillors on Monday, July 27, more than 75 per cent of the projects were complete.

Some currently on hold include reimagining Diana Krall Plaza and the small corner of green space on the corner of Albert St. and Victoria Cres.

An additional quick win was added to the list.

Corsan told councillors the $25,000 set aside to fix faulty lighting at the Great National Land Building at the corner of Chapel and Church St. won’t be needed.

“We met with the building owner and he actually fixed the lighting himself. He wasn’t interested in other upgrades so this funding is available for other aspects.”

Councillors approved instead using the funds to install way-finding signage in the Old City Quarter.

Similar signs were previously installed along at five sites throughout downtown Nanaimo in an effort to better guide tourists and create distinct districts in the area.

Corsan said signs will now be installed along Fitzwilliam St. at either end of the Old City Quarter.
