More than 400 child care, before and after school spaces to be built in Nanaimo area

NANAIMO — It’s hoped new child care spaces opening in Nanaimo and Ladysmith will ease the burden on parents and care providers.

The Ministry of Children and Family Development announced on Wednesday more than 400 new spaces will be built by the fall of 2021. They’ll be comprised of child care and before-and-after school spaces at 10 different schools within the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public School District.

Nine are in Nanaimo with one in Ladysmith.

The Forest Park Early Learning Centre will receive the most spaces, 76 in total including a mix of child care and before-and-after spaces. It’s expected to be built by June, 2021.

The smallest amount built will be at Bayview Child Care Centre, receiving 17 before-and-after school spaces.

The Ladysmith Primary Early Learning and Child Care Centre in Ladysmith will see 72 spaces, with a mix of child care and before-and-after school spots available. They’re expected to be complete in August, 2021.

  • Bayview Child Care Centre – 17 spaces
  • Cedar Elementary Child Care Centre – 20 spaces
  • Chase River Early Learning Centre – 72 spaces
  • Fairview Child Care Centre – 23 spaces
  • Forest Park Early Learning Centre – 76 spaces
  • Georgia Avenue Child Care Centre – 18 spaces
  • Ladysmith Primary Early Learning Centre – 72 spaces
  • Quarterway Child Care Centre – 18 spaces
  • Qwam Qwum Stuwiwulh Early Learning Centre – 38 spaces
  • Rock City Early Learning Centre – 52 spaces
