Vancouver Island again escapes new COVID-19 cases

NANAIMO — The number of COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island remains at 135.

A joint statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix announced 21 new COVID-19 cases across the province on Wednesday, July 15.

The number of active cases in B.C. hovers near 210 cases, which is a sharp increase from the lows of roughly 160 approximately two weeks ago.

There are currently three active cases of COVID-19 on Vancouver Island.

“We are concerned about the increase in new cases in recent days as COVID-19 continues to silently circulate in our communities,” the statement said.

“While early on, many of our long-term care and assisted living facilities were impacted, most of the new cases are in the broader community.”

This includes community transmission linked to a party in Kelowna and a strip club in Vancouver.

“No one wants to get sick with COVID-19, nor do we want to inadvertently pass it onto others. While the symptoms can be mild, it is a complex illness that has serious consequences,” the statement said.

“Let’s enjoy the summer safely and continue to do all we can to protect our neighbours, our friends and our loved ones.”

No new fatalities were announced on Wednesday.
