Lacrosse boxes and major Harewood sports court reopens

Jun 29, 2020 | 5:30 AM

NANAIMO — One of the last remaining outdoor sporting places has officially re-opened.

The Harewood Sports Court is available for use starting Monday, June 29 after closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other open lacrosse boxes across Nanaimo have also reopened.

Chris Bowman, president of the Nanaimo Timberman adult and youth teams, told NanaimoNewsNOW the players he’s spoken to have greatly missed being able to hit the courts for practice and play.

“I think a lot of kids are very excited,” he said of the re-opening. “As long as everyone maintains the proper social distancing…they can get back to those activities and spend some fun time again with their friends in the summer.”

Bowman said for players in the higher leagues, 2020 was likely the first summer in 20 years they had free time and could be home for long weekends.

Despite being open, everything hasn’t returned to normal.

Guidelines are in place at all open Nanaimo sports facilities barring contact or competitive play.

As with all other activities in B.C., gatherings over 50 people are not allowed.
