NANAIMO — The number of COVID-19 cases in B.C. continue to grow slowly, but manageably.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 20 new COVID-19 cases across the province on Thursday, none of which are on Vancouver Island. The count includes 19 active cases and one epidemiologically linked.

The Island Health region remains at 131 total instances of the novel coronavirus, including one current active case on southern Vancouver Island.

There are currently 179 active cases of COVID-19 across British Columbia. The province also announced two additional deaths related to the virus, both residents of long term care homes in the Fraser Valley area.

Dr. Henry said during a briefing on the virus, the province’s shift into phase three is an exciting time and an indication of finding a successful balance between re-opening the economy and managing the virus.

“We know that as we have more contacts, as more stores, businesses, more things open…we are going to have more cases,” Dr. Henry said. “We have those measures in place that we can stop the transmission quickly and make sure it’s not spread to large numbers of people.”

Phase three will see the gradual re-opening of hotels, spas, movie theatres and fewer restrictions on non-essential travel.
