Possible dog poisonings in Parksville under police investigation

PARKSVILLE — Oceanside RCMP say they’re investigating several incidents in recent weeks of dogs being poisoned in Parksville.

RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman told NanaimoNewsNOW police responded to a potential poisoning incident at a Roscow St. home on Tuesday, June 23.

A dog had fallen ill after discovering a hot dog wiener in the yard with some form of powder and pill sticking out of it.

Foreman said the Roscow St. incident appeared to be an intentional effort to harm an animal.

“Absolutely it looks deliberate. There was a hot dog with a pill that appeared to be pushed into it and thrown into somebody’s back door where they know somebody’s dog could be.”

A separate incident occurred nearby on the northern edge of downtown Parksville two weeks prior in which a dog was taken to the vet after eating meat left in its yard.

RCMP canvassed the Bayside Inn area and learned at least two other dogs fell ill in recent weeks.

Foreman said the dogs have all recovered.

Area security or dash came footage is now being sought by officers to advance the investigation.

“We’re wondering if anybody else has noticed their sick dog or has any information that can help us find this individual.”

Foreman said while suspected animal poisonings have occurred locally before, the Roscow St. case is unique in terms of the evidence police have to go on.

The BC SPCA has been notified.
