Nanaimo RCMP finding more prohibited weapons on the street

NANAIMO — A wide variety of dangerous weapons are being found among those experiencing homelessness in Nanaimo.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said increasing patrols through the downtown core and parks, as part of the Social Disorder Response Team, have seized an increase in weapons, included prohibited devices, from those living rough.

“Often what we’re finding is these items, if used, can cause serious injury or even death,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

“Most of these are homemade. Some are baseball bats but others are throwing stars, brass knuckles, even lawnmower blades.”

O’Brien said officers hear the weapons are used for protection.

“If all you have to hold on to is possibly a tent and a cardboard box, you’re going to do what you can to protect it. We understand the rationale but we don’t support people having weapons when walking through our streets.”

He said reports of incidents against civilians are infrequent but incidents do arise when one person experiencing homelessness attacks another.

The team responsible for tackling this issue is fully funded throughout the rest of the year. They’re tasked with clearing out encampments, collecting shopping carts and needles.
