NANAIMO — The increase of COVID-19 fatalities in B.C. has halted in recent days.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced no new deaths by Tuesday, June 9. No lives have been lost to the respiratory virus since Friday, June 5. A total of 167 people have passed away in B.C. since the pandemic began.

Island Health and Interior Health are the two remaining health authorities with no active COVID-19 cases.

Two of the 10 new cases announced by Dr. Henry in her daily press briefing are in Northern Health, which has reported zero active cases in recent days.

Dr. Henry also detailed no new cases in long-term care facilities or new community outbreaks.

Currently there are 183 active cases of COVID-19 with 2.659 active or resolved cases recorded in B.C. so far. The recovery rate from the virus is 86.8 per cent.

With B.C.’s numbers fairly low, Dr. Henry turned her attention to the global situation.

“Across Canada and around the world it’s still a major problem,” she said. “Many regions are facing a resurgence in cases as they’ve taken measures to open up, including regions very close to us in the United States.”

June 8 marked the single largest day for new COVID-19 cases across the world.

“When this is in one country, we are all connected. It matters to us when something happens in China, in Italy, in the United States and now Canada.”
