NANAIMO — The Island Health region continues to have just one, active case of COVID-19.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry confirmed 24 new cases were identified in B.C. since the last update on Saturday, May 30.

None were on Vancouver Island, an area which hasn’t seen a new active case since the first week of May.

Across B.C., 224 cases of COVID-19 are considered active. Thirty-two patients in hospital including one on Vancouver Island and five in critical or intensive care.

During her daily briefing on Monday, June 1, Dr. Henry addressed growing protests related to the killing of Minneapolis man George Floyd in the U.S.

Anti-racism rallies drew large crowds in Vancouver and Victoria on Sunday, with a rally planned for Nanaimo on Friday, June 5.

“Peaceful demonstration is our right, one that is important to all of us,” Dr. Henry said. “But we cannot forget that we are still in the middle of a pandemic that is affecting our communities and our loved ones.”

Dr. Henry said she was pleased to see many people wearing masks and socially distancing themselves during demonstrations, however many gatherings broke the province’s mandated 50 person limit.

“Those who were there yesterday, you may have put yourself at risk and you may bring that back to your home so you need to monitor yourself carefully over the coming days to two weeks and if you have any symptoms, you need to self isolate and get tested,” Dr. Henry said.

The province has recorded 2,597 total cases of COVID-19, with approximately 85 per cent fully recovering from the virus.
