NANAIMO — A weekend ATV accident has claimed the life of one man near Nanaimo on Friday, May 29.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, the 33 year old man from Cobble Hill was critically injured around 9:30 p.m., while on a service road with a group of riders about 18 kilometres off Nanaimo Lakes Road.

Police, BC Paramedics and Nanaimo Search and Rescue crews responded however due to the remoteness of the location it took time to get to the group.

Locating the group of five men in their 30’s to 50’s was done through using GPS on cell phone pings.

“BC Paramedics couldn’t attend (the scene directly) so our members went in with Nanaimo Search and Rescue on their all terrain vehicle,” Cst Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “It took about two and a half hours to get into the site.”

Search and Rescue crews administered first aid for an extended period of time, but the man died from his injuries.

A preliminary investigation by RCMP suggested the incident was an accident, however BC Coroners Service will fully investigate the death.

“There’s inherent risks associated with that especially late at night ATV’ing in an area you may not be familiar with,” O’Brien said. “Safety equipment is always essential and keep in mind you need cell coverage or some way to contact emergency first aid.”
