NANAIMO — Vancouver Island continues to avoid new, active COVID-19 cases.

In a joint statement, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix confirmed four new cases of novel coronavirus across B.C., with one in the Vancouver region and three in Fraser health.

The Island has not seen a new, active case of COVID-19 since the first week of May.

Across the province, 228 active cases remain with 34 people hospitalized including the Island Health region’s only active case.

For the second time in a week, no new deaths were attributed to COVID-19 across B.C., leaving the total number of people who have lost their lives to the virus at 164.

On Thursday, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry continued to scale back health orders put in place during the height of the pandemic.

Her latest revision surrounded farmers markets and the sale of non-food items such as clothing and jewellery.

“Easing restrictions can be done only after thoughtful consideration,” Friday’s statement said. “Our focus and priority are the health and safety of all British Columbians. With your help and all of us doing our part, we will get through this storm together.”

Despite no new additions on Friday, COVID-19 outbreaks remain at 16 long term care, assisted living facilities or acute-care units in the province.
