MINOR ADJUSTMENT

Data error bumps Island COVID-19 case count to 127, one active case remains

NANAIMO — The total number of active or resolved COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island has grown, but not through a new, positive test.

In a joint statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix, the 127th case of COVID-19 for the Island Health region is linked to a person involved in the Kearl Lake outbreak in Alberta.

The person completed self-isolation in Alberta and recovered from the novel coronavirus before returning to the Island.

“The discrepancy between new cases and total cases with the…Island Health region reported today are a data consolidation to reflect COVID-19 cases based on where individuals reside, even if they were not in the health authority during their illness,” the statement said.

The adjustment continues a streak of no new, active cases on Vancouver Island since May 8 when the region confirmed its 125th case. The last two additions to the regional total have been through data corrections.

Overall, 18 new cases were confirmed in B.C. for a total of 2,507 active or resolved cases. Of those, 310 are still considered active with 41 patients in hospital.

Three additional deaths were also announced by the province, all in the Fraser Health region. To date, 155 people across B.C. and five on Vancouver Island have lost their lives to COVID-19 related illness.
