NANAIMO — Police say a man was sent to Nanaimo Hospital following an unsuccessful attempt to cross Cedar Rd. late Sunday evening.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said it happened at 10:30 p.m. near the Cedar General Store north of Meynell Rd.

“Two males were walking southbound on Cedar Road when one of the males decided to walk across the roadway when he was struck by a northbound pickup truck,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

He said drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors on behalf of the driver.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the 53-year-old man who was hit or the man he was walking with were wearing visible clothing or accessories.

“The driver of the truck remained at the scene, he cooperated with investigators,” O’Brien said. “His vehicle has been seized for mechanical inspection. The victim was transported to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.”

The incident occurred over the crest of a hill where there are no crosswalks and limited street lighting.

O’Brien said their investigation into the incident is in the preliminary stages.
