Additional garbage truck ordered to combat more waste placed on Nanaimo curbs

NANAIMO — It’s hoped a new garbage truck will limit pickup delays as Nanaimo continues to grow.

Nanaimo city councillors unanimously approved on Monday, May 11 borrowing roughly $406,000 to purchase one new automated garbage truck.

A staff report said the new truck will “eliminate weekly overtime and allow for future growth.” The future growth includes a new garbage route being introduced.

Waste collection across Nanaimo faced significant challenges in recent years.

Pickups were delayed numerous times throughout 2019 as trucks fell out of service for repair. Two used garbage trucks were bought to replace trucks being taken off the road.

From August 2018 to August 2019 roughly 1,100 new collections were added as Nanaimo continued to expand.

Former sanitation manager David Thompson told NanaimoNewsNOW at the time the expansion increased “beyond what we had anticipated.”

No garbage delay notices were issued by the City so far in 2020, except when hampered by snowy weather earlier in the year.
