NANAIMO — Island Health is reassuring people their public health units remain safe places to get necessary shots.

South Island medical health officer Dr. Dee Hoyano said it appears COVID-19 is the main reason behind a jump in cancelled immunization appointments.

She told NanaimoNewsNOW it’s especially important for children to stay up to date on their immunizations schedule.

“The last thing we want to see is an outbreak of another communicable disease which can happen if our immunization rates drop,” Dr. Hoyano said.

She said immunizations are essential health services for young children, adding that not addressing vaccine- preventable diseases properly can lead to serious complications and even death.

“Our health facilities are definitely offering this in a safe manner and they are taking steps just like many other health services are to decrease that risk for people coming in.”

Dr. Hoyano said people who book immunizations through public health are screened for illnesses, while additional infectious control, physical distancing and staggered appointments are implemented.
