NANAIMO — A City of Nanaimo facility is being turned into a suitable space for those experiencing homelessness to self-isolate.

An Emergency Response Centre will be established in the Community Services Building at 285 Prideaux St. on June 1.

Lisa Bhopalsingh, manager of community and cultural planning with the City, said 35 shelter spaces will be created at the building for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“While admittedly there’s not enough shelter space, this is at least the start to get the most vulnerable people off the street and connect them with services that help move them on to better, more permanent solutions,” she told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The facility will be operated and managed by Island Crisis Care Society, who serve the same function at the Newcastle Place temporary housing facility.

It was secured by BC Housing, who were given a list by the City of available locations to house those living on the streets.

Two valuable services already established in the building will remain open.

The 7-10 Club is expected to continue as normal, serving hundreds of free takeout meals every day.

The organization Options for Sexual Health will continue operating on site but with limited hours and offering only essential service.

The one month delay in opening is due to the City giving one months notice to the clients who are currently using the building.

Community members with questions regarding the Emergency Response Centre at 285 Prideaux Street can reach out to BC Housing at communityrelations@bchousing.org.

BC Housing has previously secured two sites in Nanaimo for sheltering those living rough, for a total of 12 spaces.
